He always told the guys who worked for his roofing company to 'Hurry!' " He believed hard work was a virtue, and he was a very good provider. His family writes: "He will be deeply missed for all the love, advice and care he so lovingly gave his family and others. He loved spending time with his daughter and grandchildren.
He enjoyed traveling in his recreational vehicle, going to Las Vegas, playing cards, eating great food, going to his cabin, snowmobiling and collecting model cars. He was a member of the Fairview Community Council. Smart was a member of the Masonic Order at Glacier Lodge 10, the Moose Lodge, a 32nd degree member of Scottish Rite and a Shriner. He was involved in the business until his death. He became a roofer when he was 18 years old and founded his own roofing company, General Roofing, in 1972 after moving to Alaska in 1965.
He also served with the 138th Infantry in the National Guard. He served in the Army's 101st Airborne Division, attending Ranger school and was based in Fort Campbell, Ky. Family wrote that "he graduated from 'the school of hard knocks!' " 30, 1931, in Pickett, Ark., to Joseph Smart and Millie McCluskey-Smart. As he wished, his cremated remains will be scattered over Sleeping Lady, reuniting him with his late wife.
